Firewalls protect your internal network from electronic attack from the Internet. If you have no Firewall in place, every time you connect to the Internet you are open to intrusion, although you may not know that someone is ‘hacking’ into your system. The attack may take the form of corruption of data, theft of information, or fraud. All organisations should have a Firewall in place, but it is of vital importance for those who trade via the internet or who have sensitive or valuable data.
A Router allows PCs on your network to share a single Internet connection. The Router, in its simplest form, will provide Internet connection sharing and Firewall features. More advanced versions can be configured to allow or deny access on an individual user basis to the variety of protocols used for transmission/reception on the Internet. For example, you may only want key members of staff to be able to browse the web a properly configured Router will allow you to bar access to all but those specified people.
